Gear Hire

We recommend Sportpoint for hiring gear in Kranjska Gora. The staff are excellent, and speak good English and you receive a 10% discount on hire and lessons through us. Ski Pass Travel is a great place to organise your passes from, at slightly discounted rates. A photo is needed for most passes.

Skiing

Slovenia offers a variety of ski resorts, some are very local; the slope in Mojstrana and the family friendly resort of Kranjska Gora 15 minutes away with 25kms of excellently prepared pistes which are covered by snow canons in the event of poor snow fall. More demanding slopes are in Krvavec and Kanin, both of which are about 1 hour away. The ski area of Vogel, near Lake Bohinj is only 40 minutes away. With the borders to Italy and Austria so close, within an hour you could also ski in 3 countries over the course of your holiday, and such a ski pass is available to buy (€121 for 6 days for an adult and €84 for children with photo, season 07/08). You could take in the 130kms of Piste at Nassfeld (Austria) a resort not well known to Brits, or try your technique on the World Cup runs at Tarvisio (Italy) and Kranjska Gora. As well as the challenge of downhill skiing, there are also many cross- country routes. Again, some go from the door in Mojstrana and others are just a short journey, right through to the competition courses at Pokljuka, 40 minutes away.

The local hire store also hires out Snow Shoes, which enable you to walk at your own pace in deep snow, so you can really feel intrepid and enjoy the mountains and valleys when they are draped in snow. At Planica, 14kms away, there is “Ski Flying” and time your trip to be in mid March and you could be treated to seeing the “Flying men” ski jump like you’ve never seen before!

Tobogganing

A slope specially for tobogganing is available in Mojstrana, and there are several designated areas at Kranjska Gora and Podkoren for the more adventurous.
It is also possible to take sledges on many of the local walks, simply walking up as far as you want and then tobogganing back!!! In the nearby Tamar valley, you can go into Kranjska Gora and “book” onto a minibus trip that goes up the valley in the early evening, and you toboggan back in the twilight in torch- light. Dog Sledding: There is a dog sledding course just on the border with Italy,16kms away, In early February there are the annual championships.

Ice Skating

Ice- skating is a popular sport in Slovenia, and there are rinks in Mojstrana and Kranjska Gora. The lake above Kranjska Gora, Jasna, also freezes over and you can ice skate there, to a spectacular backdrop of the Julian Alps. Don’t worry if the Easyjet weight allowance is going to be exceeded, you can also hire ice skates and or sledges. For a spectator sport, the top ice hockey team in Slovenia clash it out in Jesenice, which is always worth a watch and just 15 minutes away.
